A power-hitting outfielder, Speake spent four seasons in the major leagues with the Cubs and Giants. He appeared destined for big things with his bat as he blasted 28 home runs in his first two seasons in the majors. His 1957 campaign with Chicago was a solid one. He hit 16 home runs in 129 games with 50 RBI and 65 runs scored. However, his .232 batting average indicated potential problems and they came in 1958. Speake played in 66 games that season for San Francisco but hit just .211 with three home runs. The next season, 1959, was his last in the majors as he hit less than .100 in 15 games for the Giants.
