A reserve outfielder, Smith played for seven seasons for five different teams in the major leagues. He came up with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1957, playing in 93 games and hitting .211. He appeared in 98 games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960 and had the best offensive year of his career. He hit .286 that season with four home runs, 27 RBI and 24 runs scored. All of these were career highs. Smith’s career high for games played came in 1962 when he played in 112 games for the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs and the Cardinals. For his career, Smith hit .243 with 13 home runs.

Smith was a member of the opening day roster for the first New York Mets’ team in 1961. He only spent eight games with them, however, as he was traded to the Cubs. Smith died in Hood River, Oregon on November 24, 2015.
