I took a shot with the Hall of Famer because I’d read he was sometimes agreeable to such things. Alas, it did not work out. Still, he sent this cool autographed picture, so it’s not like I came away empty handed.

Hemus’ card came back unsigned with a blank questionnaire and a note from his wife saying he is too sick to write. An infielder, Hemus played 11 years in the majors, mostly with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was later the team’s manager for two seasons. Unfortunately, he passed away on Oct. 2, 2017 in Houston.

Campaneris spent 19 seasons in the major leagues, earning six All-Star Game trips and multiple MVP votes in the process. He finished his career with well over 2,000 hits and 649 stolen bases. He was a key part of three World Series winners while playing with the Oakland A’s in the early 1970’s.
