Sperring saw action in 208 big league games, playing for the Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros from 1974-1977. He hit .211 in 473 at bats, with the majority of his success coming with the Cubs in the first three years of his career. His best year came in his third, and final, season with Chicago. He hit .258 in 93 at bats. He joined the Astros the following year, but hit just .186 in 58 games.
Sperring hit a home run in his first game in MLB. It came on August 11, 1974 against the San Francisco Giants. He had two hits in the contest against Giants’ hurler Mike Caldwell, but the Cubs lost 5-3. The blast proved to be more of an outlier than an indication of things to come, as Sperring hit just two more in his career.
