Between 1976 and 1980, Tamargo appeared in 135 games for the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos. In 244 at bats he hit .242 with four home runs. Tamargo twice played in 42 games in a season, which would rank as his career high. His best year was probably his last year, as he hit .275 with 13 RBIs in 37 games while backing up Gary Carter for the Expos in 1980.
April 10, 1979 was opening day at Candlestick Park and Tamargo made it a memorable one. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, he pinch hit for Vida Blue and took John D’Acquisto deep to give the Giants a walk-off win over the San Diego Padres.
