Carpenter went 27-22 with a 3.91 ERA during eight years in the big leagues. He came up with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1988 and won 10 games pitching out of the bullpen for the team in 1991. His best year, however, might have been the next one. Once again working exclusively out of the bullpen, Carpenter won five games in 1989 and posted a 2.97 ERA in a career-high 88 innings. St. Louis lost Carpenter to the Florida Marlins in the 1992 expansion draft. He was dealt to the Texas Rangers in 1993 and pitched two years for them before his career ended.
Carpenter was the punter for the University of Georgia football team from 1985-1986.
